People and places

8 April 2009 Gerald (1996) and Kath Donker have been planning for their relocation from Sydney to Melut, in Southern Sudan, where Gerald will be teaching at Gideon Theological College. Gerald is currently working full-time on completion of his thesis through Macquarie University, and plans to complete that for submission in late May/early June, so that they're free to leave for Sudan in August. The past few months have been hectic, with Gerald travelling to Boston, USA to present a paper on his research at a Society of Biblical Literature conference, then on to Muenster Germany assessing additional manuscript resources for his thesis, and then finally on to Melut in December 2008 to consider accommodation, schooling, and other requirements in anticipation of their move. After a little time with family in Sydney in the New Year, Gerald was again away from home fo six weeks, this time at Cambridge, UK under a scholarship awarded by Macquarie University.

Gerald and Kath are working under the auspices of Pioneers of Australia. Former students and colleagues who would like to get in touch with the Donkers can contact Pioneers (info@pioneers.org.au) or, contact us here at BCV (moliver@bcv.vic.edu.au) and we would be delighted to pass on your details to Gerald and Kath so that they can get reconnect with you.

Janet Maddern (1996) Since graduation I have looked to serve God in my capacity as a nurse, a mother of three boys and wife of a Mathamatics Head teacher in rural and outback Queensland and NSW. We currently have just moved to Broken Hill with the aim to assist the local Baptist Church and the local BCA (Bush Church Aid) couple. Both Noel and I strongly believe in the need for working Christians to support the local church in small and large rural and remote towns - the need is so great. Many churches are struggling with only a few members taking on the load. Even in bigger towns like Broken Hill (20 000) the need is huge. Often many of the things I learnt at college pop up as helpful, not only if I am doing the ministry but also in my support of my husband's and other's ministries. Our email address is noelandjanet@hotmail.com love to hear from everyone.

Colin and Jill Bakon (1994) returned to Loja, Equador with SIM in June after a year’s furlough in NSW. They plan to be there for the next four years. (September 2006)

Janine and Derek Buntrock (1998) will return to PNG with MAF for another two-year term (2007-08), relocating to Hagen, where Janine will continue to home-school their daughterss and Derek will take up a split role as part time instructor pilot and part time executive officer. The family will be on furlough in Melbourne in November and December. (September 2006)

Dennis Sek (1990) and his family live in Subang Jaya, Malaysia. They attend Community Baptist Chuch and have been involved with the youth ministry in the first 8 years post-BCV. Currently he serves as congregational leader intern, supervising two cell groups under  the congregational pastor. Dennis works as an engineer with a software company.

From 1993 to 2001 James Chacko(1993) served as the Principal of COTR Theological Seminary, Visakhapatnam, India. From 2001 to 2003 he served as the National Director of Compassion for India (now Empart), a growing church planting movement in North India and pioneered an urban church called CityLight in the city of Chandigarh, India. In 2003 James founded The New and Living Way and serves as the Executive Director, with the primary vision of equipping frontline church planters for the world’s largest unreached region of North India. They also run Home Based Children’s Home for destitute children. He is also pursuing Ph.D. through the Centre for Religious Studies at Punjabi University, India. With excellent communication skills and depth of knowledge and experience James travels widely in India, Australia and USA as a visiting faculty and guest speaker at colleges, churches and mission conferences. Also, as a family, they assist the pioneering of an urban church in the city of Chandigarh. James and his wife Usha reside in Chandigarh, India with their two children, Dawn (10) and David (5). You are invited to visit our website at www.newandlivingway.in for more information on our ministry.

Mal and Jenny Watts (both 1998) are serving with SIM in Burkina Faso. In their July newsletter, they wrote to say the registration and opening of the clinic was a praise point.  It has a a small radiology section, pharmacy and a laboratory and is open every day.`It has been a long time coming,'' they said, and ask for prayer for Jenny, who will work part-time in the lab, and her colleague, Joseph.

The clinic, set up by Navigators Burkina Faso, is supported by donors from the US and Holland and has been driven by a Nigerian missionary doctor who was  trained by an Australian SIM missionary. Jenny said at this stage it is an outpatient clinic and sees any medical case that comes through the door.

Sandy(1995) and Narelle Wilson were accepted by the MAF Australia candidates’ committee in April and are due to arrive in PNG at the end of this month (August). (June 06)

Joanne Harvey (1996) has been teaching Geography and RME (Religious and Moral Education) at a High School near Glasgow, Scotland, for five years now. She writes: "I love it. I teach all ages of pupil from 11 to 18 and each year presents a different challenge. I'm about to do more study - cos I miss it so much! - as I aim to get a Master of Education Certificate in the process of becoming a Chartered Teacher. For those who remember the poems from college - these still appear at Church form time to time at special events.
My BCV years were great years andit was a unique character-building experience. I look back with great memories of the place and the people I spent time with.
